about

This 1991-penned number, sadly, is a song that continues to find life today. Written in response to the jingoism of the lead up to Gulf War I ("Daddy's War"), the tune is unchanged from its earlier incarnation, except that it gets an angrier reading today. "Planning your next mess" indeed...

lyrics

Lying in fear, six months in a bunker
Enemy shells supplied by German manufacturers
Called up on reserve from General Dynamics
When I got hit by a bomb put together by my own mechanics

In an unrelated story, someone tore a face out of a photograph
War is surgical, but surgery is bloody
Can't you get that through your head
While you're cleaning up your mess?

We came home to parades and emotion
A heartless charade of national devotion
Fighting for the American way
Not on the streets of New York but the hotels of Kuwait

In an unrelated story, someone tore a face out of a photograph
War is surgical, but surgery is bloody
Can't you get that through your head
While you're cleaning up your mess?

Man stepped out of the cradle of life
And blew himself to pieces on an unexploded mine
The battle for the market is the fiercest of all
They're putting in bids to build the new Baghdad mall

In an unrelated story, someone tore a face out of a photograph
War is surgical, but surgery is bloody
Can't you get that through your head
While you're cleaning up your mess?

They'll beat their ploughshares into swords
And carry out their new world orders
The generals talk about rearming
When all I really wanted was to go to university and study farming

If you're well fed you're fed well enough
If you follow where you're led you might be led off a cliff
Why don't you ask yourself what freedom means
Or would you rather sacrifice your future to the Washington machine

In an unrelated story, someone tore a face out of a photograph
War is surgical, but surgery is bloody
Can't you get that through your head
While you're planning your next mess
