about
We must have sat there for about an hour as the song played on infinite repeat, automatically rewinding to the start every time the last breath of sustain disappeared at song’s end. There’d be a sharp ker-chunk, like a slap, as the tape stopped, then the whirr as the deck accelerated in its rewind mode, a sudden deceleration and, finally, another ker-chunk that was the song starting all over again from the beginning. We must have listened to the damn thing twenty times — and finished the bottle of tequila — before Eddie got up again, hit the stop button and switched off the power.
“I need some air,” he said, and left the garage.
I waited about the time it takes to smoke a cigarette before heading outside. Eddie stood with one arm outstretched, propping himself against a tree, staring deep into the earth under his feet. He took a last drag from his Marlboro Light and crushed it in the dead grass.
“You okay?” I said from the safety of the front stoop.
“What? Yeah,” he said. He turned to me. “You know what that is, don’t you?”
“It’s a warning. About Angela,” I said. “From beyond the grave.”
Eddie stared at me and laughed.
“What’s so funny?”
“Mark may have finally figured out Angela was fooling around behind his back,” said Eddie, adding, “Took him long enough,” under his breath. He lit up a cigarette and tossed me the carton. “But it inspired him, right? He didn’t write that to scare anyone off, he wrote it because he had an idea for a solid few minutes of pop music gold. What we have here, Billy Boy, is a fucking hit record. Man left us his legacy. On two-inch tape. It’s a gift from the gods.”
I inhaled a lungful of heat from the cigarette I'd just lit, let it linger deep in my lungs, then spoke. The smoke poured out before dissipating into a pitch black night. “Or a deal with the devil."

(Don't Mess Around with) A Girl from Another Man's Song
Will you or won’t you
Behind the door she sits
The train has left the station
That lock wants to be picked
I’m not saying anyone’s to blame
If I were in your shoes, I might just do the same
She’s sending signals
The smoke gets in your eyes
You’re caught up in her headlights
But you don’t realize
I’m not saying anyone’s to blame
If you jump her tracks she might drive you insane
She plays like nothing’s wrong
But you’ve known all along
You don’t mess around with a girl from another man’s song
So you’ve been blinded
It’s such a simple brew
A loaded word “temptation”
I’ve got my eye on you
I’m not saying anyone’s to blame
If I were in your shoes, I’d probably do the same
Someday I might be gone
But you’ve known all along
You don’t mess around with a girl from another man’s song
Your idea is theft
You will and away
She’s out of your depth
It’s your turn to pay
You won’t hear my steps
You’ve made your mistake
Go rewrite the text
Black marks on the page
You’re caught up in my headlights
But you don’t realize
The train just keeps a-comin’
The smoke gets in your eyes
I’m not saying anyone’s to blame
If I were in your shoes, I might just do the same
Oh yeah, you’ve done me wrong
’cos you’ve known all along
You don’t mess around with a girl from another man’s song
You don’t mess around with a girl from another man’s song
You don’t mess around with a girl from another man’s song
