about

This looks oddly familiar...Maybe because it's a true story. Boy meets girl. Boy stares and stares and stares at girl. Boy misses chance to be with girl. Boy writes song about it. Pop music's most basic equation in action.

This quiet little number is what I like to call the "Local" version. The Late Joys rockin' version is the "Express," choo-choo! Think of this one as the slow train to True Love with stops at Infatuation, Lower Self Esteem and Heartbreak.

lyrics

I'm standing here waiting for the seventeen forty-eight
I know it's near, I can practically hear it, but I'm distracted every day
On platform four is the girl that I adore though she doesn't even know my real name
I'm just that shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain

I'm soaking wet but you can bet I don't feel a thing
I'm out of my head about the place her sweater ends and where the curve of her begins
Around the tracks comes her train and so that's that, she climbs aboard it takes her away
And leaves this shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain

Every day is on schedule all the trains run on time
I lost my heart in Tynecastle or somewhere on the Glasgow Line

I've got an ache that only she can take away
I've got this pain, but how can I explain, I look forward to it every day
I stop and stare at her blue skirt and blond hair, 'til her train arrives and takes her away
I'm just that shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain

There's Murrayfield and the Caledonian Brewery
Those points of interest they fade into the distance the day she sticks her tongue out at me
But that is that, I stand frozen in my tracks, as her train arrives and takes her away
And leaves this shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain
I'm just that shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain
I'm just that shy boy standing in the Haymarket rain
